Dr. Zoumenou, Professor of Dietetics and Nutrition, State Extension Nutrition Specialist, and EFNEP Coordinator is the Director of the 1890 Nutrition and Health Programs, and Director of the “Center for Obesity Prevention Serving Preschoolers, their Siblings, and Caregivers at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Dr. Zoumenou earned a Doctorate in Biochemistry and Nutrition (1994) (National University of Abidjan Côte d’Ivoire) and a PhD in Dietetics and Nutrition (2006) (Florida International University, Miami, Florida). Dr. Zoumenou develops and conducts Cooperative Extension outreach programs and research projects emphasizing the nutritional needs throughout the life cycle with particular target on chronic disease prevention. For the past ten years, she provides leadership for two outreach federal nutrition and health programs: the 1890 Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) program and the 1890 Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and recently she was awarded a Robert Wood Johnson Award to implement a culture of health initiative in three communities in the Tri-county area of the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. Dr. Zoumenou also developed and implemented a successful replicable two-year longitudinal Childhood Obesity Project focusing on Head Start preschoolers and their caregivers at home and at school. She created the UMES Center for Obesity Prevention Serving Preschoolers, their Siblings, and Caregivers (COP-SPSC). Dr. Zoumenou built a strong collaboration with the underserved communities, the social services, and the community based organizations at the local, state, national, and international level. Dr. Zoumenou was honored: with the 2015 1890s Region Excellence in Extension award by the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) and NIFA; with the 1890 Excellence in Extension Award in the area of the Family and Consumer Sciences by the 1890 Association of Extension Administrators, twice with the White House President’s Volunteer Service Award (2010-2012), and with the 2013 Robert F. Allen Symbol of H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People through Empowerment).
